I’ll Take You There

As Tunesmate noted one week ago, 1972 was a big year for Chicago-based vocal group the Chi-Lites, who scored their only number one single with “Oh Girl” that year.  One week after the Chi-Lites hit number one, another Chicago-based vocal group followed them at the top of the chart when, exactly 40 years ago today, the Staple Singers rose to the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with “I’ll Take You There.”  Like “Oh Girl,” “I’ll Take You There” would spend one week at number one.  That ties the song for the biggest hit of the Staple Singers’ career with “Let’s Do It Again,” which hit the top for one week in the last week of 1975.
