The Chi-Lites
In the early 1970s, the Chicago-based vocal group the Chi-Lites hit the top five with consecutive singles on what would be their only two top 20 hits. In December 1971, “Have You Seen Her” peaked at number three on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. Then, exactly 40 years ago today, “Oh Girl” hit number one for one week.
Both songs would resurface in the top ten in 1990 by different artists. On September 15 of that year, MC Hammer hit number four with his remake of “Have You Seen Her.” Then, less than a month later, on October 6, Paul Young hit number eight with his remake of “Oh Girl.” In fact, the week that MC Hammer fell out of the top ten was the same week that Young entered it, meaning that the Chi-Lites barely missed having remakes of their two biggest hits in the top ten at the same time.
