Guess What? Pete Townshend’s Second Song He Wrote Was A Hit!

Back in 1964, The Who were looking to establish themselves as a band. Pete Townshend took it upon himself to start writing his own music rather than just doing covers. Per Townsend’s autobiography Who I Am, the first song he wrote as a teen before the Who formed was hokey. However, when the later band decided they need original music, he came up with “I Can’t Explain“. The song did well on the UK Singles Chart reaching the position of #8. The tune was less successful on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and only peaked at #93.  My favorite version of the song was done by Scorpions recorded on their greatest hits album Best of Rockers ‘n’ Ballads in 1989.
