Down Under

In January 1983, Australian band Men at Work hit number 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for three weeks with “Down Under.”  During the first week of February, the song slipped to number 2 behind Toto’s “Africa.”  But the next week — the week ending exactly 30 years ago today — “Down Under” popped back to the top for a fourth and final week.

“Down Under” was Men at Work’s second number one single on the Hot 100, following “Who Can It Be Now?” which spent a week at the top in October 1982.  Both of those singles came from the band’s Business as Usual album.  They would follow that album up with Cargo, which spawned two more top 10 hits in 1983:  “Overkill,” which reached number 3, and “It’s a Mistake,” which climbed to number 6.
