DEF: Artists United Against Apartheid “Sun City”

In 1985 musician Steven Van Zandt, whom you may know as a member of the E Street Band, and record producer Arthur Baker brought together a group of various musical artists and acts to protest apartheid in South Africa. The group, which included the likes of Bob Dylan, U2, Run-D.M.C., Bruce Springsteen, Pat Benatar, Peter Gabriel, and a multitude of others, called themselves Artists United Against Apartheid, and they recorded a song titled “Sun City” that was released as a single and reached the Top 40 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. On this date in 1985, “Sun City” hit its peak position of number 38, where it would spend one week.
