Hands Across America happened 39 years ago on Sunday, May 25 1986. The Memorial Day fundraising event goal was to have people join hands in a line across the entire United States from Los Angeles to New York. About 5.5 million people took part, but the chain had gaps in some places, especially in the desert areas of the Southwest.
