In October, when Tunesmate debuted the “It Happened 50 Years Ago” feature, the subject of the post was the Supremes, who had hit number one exactly 50 years earlier with their song “Baby Love.” A little less than two months later, “It Happened 50 Years Ago” once again featured the Supremes, this time commemorating five decades since “Come See About Me” had reached number one. A little more than three months later, today marks the 50th anniversary of yet another number one hit for the Detroit-based Motown group.
Exactly 50 years ago “Stop! In The Name Of Love” climbed into the top spot on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for the first week of a two-week reign. “Stop” was the fourth consecutive song by the Supremes to hit number one, amid a streak that would extend to five just a few months later. For as much as 1964 marked the Year of the Beatles, and that group continued its dominance in 1965, it’s worth noting the phenomenal success the Supremes were enjoying at the same time.
