Five for Five: Five Singles For Under a Dollar

No, this is not a fast food pitch.

This is a format I will use to highlight some stellar vinyl bargains everytime there are five Fridays in a month. These five 7″ singles are available to buy on Discogs (and likely your local record store) for about a dollar each. Unlike iTunes, these dollar bargains include a B-side, so it really is a two for one deal. At time of publishing, the total cost of every record on this list is $4.59. This list was not meant to be mostly 80s music but that is probably telling of my personal taste.

5. Frank & Moon Zappa – Valley Girl

Gag me with a spoon

Father and daughter Frank and Moon Zappa released this satirical single in 1982 and forever changed the American pop culture lexicon with phrases such as “grody to the max”. B-side is You Are What You Is from Zappa’s album Thingfish. (Get it for $1.27)

4. ‘Til Tuesday – Voices Carry

Hush, hush

‘Til Tuesday launched Aimee Mann’s career and nothing catapulted it quicker than 1985’s Voices Carry. B-side is Are You Serious? (Get it for $1.25)

3. Queen – Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Gotta be cool – relax

Queen goes rockabilly with this 1979 classic that could have easily been an Elvis Presley single. B-side is Spread Your Wings. (Get it for $0.75)

2.  Tears for Fears – Shout

Let it all out

The second single from their incredible second album Songs From the Big Chair is perhaps the band’s best known song, maybe tied with Everybody Wants to Rule the World. The b-side is The Big Chair. (Get it for $1.23)

1. Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart

Forever’s gonna start tonight

Who exactly is Bright Eyes? No matter, this 1983 power ballad still has the ability to inspire amateur karaoke stars around the world to belt out in Bonnie Tyler’s distinct rasp. The b-side is Straight From the Heart. (Get it for $0.11)
