DEF: Lionel Richie “Say You, Say Me”

Three weeks ago, the Daily Eighties Flashback was the duet “Separate Lives” by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin, a number one hit from the film White Nights. While that song topped Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, it wasn’t the biggest hit from the film. That distinction goes to Lionel Richie‘s “Say You, Say Me,” which exactly 30 years ago, climbed to number one for a four-week reign. Interestingly, while “Say You, Say Me” won an Academy Award for best song from a film, it wasn’t placed on the film’s soundtrack. “Say You, Say Me” was also the last of Richie’s five number one singles from his solo career outside of the Commodores.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of its rise to the top, “Say You, Say Me” by Lionel Richie is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.
