DEF: Gary U.S. Bonds “Out Of Work”

Jacksonville, Florida-born singer Gary U.S. Bonds first hit Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in 1960, when “New Orleans” rose to number 6. Over the next two years, Bonds would score six more Top 40 hits, including his biggest hit, “Quarter To Three,” which spent two weeks at number one in 1961.

Bonds went nearly 19 years before returning to the Hot 100 in 1981 and 1982 with “This Little Girl,” “Jole Blon,” and “Out Of Work.” That final song, “Out of Work,” which was written by Bruce Springsteen, would be Bonds’ final Top 40 hit and final appearance on the Hot 100 to date. On this date in 1982, “Out Of Work” hit its peak position of number 21, where it would spend two weeks.

“Out Of Work” is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.
