Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart Turns 60

Over the past six decades, Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart has become the staple for marking pop music success and for marking time. Today, the Hot 100 chart marks a significant moment in time itself, as it is the 60th anniversary of the chart’s debut. What was number one on that very first chart, dated August 4, 1958? The answer is “Poor Little Fool” by Ricky Nelson, which you can hear above. To commemorate the event, Billboard has compiled a number of lists of top artists and songs throughout the Hot 100’s run, including a list of the Top 600 songs in chart history.
