50 Years of Girl Groups at Number 1
Throughout rock ‘n’ roll history a lot of all-female singing acts, often known as “girl groups,” have gone to number 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, including the likes of the Supremes in the 1960s, the Emotions in the 1970s, Bananarama in the 1980s, Destiny’s Child in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and a host of others along the way. It was 50 years ago today, though, that a girl group hit number 1 for the first time in the rock ‘n’ roll era, when the Shirelles moved to the top of the chart for a two-week stay with “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”–a song that would be remade countless times in the five decades since.
