25 Years Ago in the Nineties: Depeche Mode “Personal Jesus”

Essex, England-based band Depeche Mode hit the Top 20 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in 1985 with their song “People Are People.” Then, for the next four and a half years, while the band had a significant following and charted below the Top 40 with a number of singles, including “Strangelove” and “Master And Servant,” they failed to reach the Top 40 again. That all changed with their Violator album, which spawned three Top 40 singles. Exactly 25 years ago, the first of those hits, “Personal Jesus,” was entering its peak position of number 28, where it would spend one week.
