Valerie and Eddie

Valerie Bertinelli got married last night.  It’s her second marriage, with the first, more famous one, being to Eddie Van Halen.  When Bertinelli and Van Halen got married back in 1981, it was billed, in places like the Entertainment Tonight segment above, as the girl next door from One Day at a Time marrying the “bad boy” rocker.  It’s not, though, like she was marrying a member of Black Sabbath or something.  On the other hand, given that Eddie’s cocaine addiction is reportedly what led to their divorce, maybe that characterization was accurate.  What do you think?

You may be right, but the fact that Ed and Valerie had a child together ten years after this interview may mean something. Furthermore it also may mean something that Eddie was at her wedding.

I think more was made of that storyline than it really was. It became an easy way to sell their images and a storyline for the marriage, but I’ve never thought of Eddie as a “bad boy” kind of image. This seemed much more of a media construction based in a couple of simple stereotypes.

I think you’re right that it says something that Eddie was at the wedding. On the surface at least, it seems like they both care about one another pretty deeply and their split was pretty amicable.
