With 20 Top 40 singles on Billboard‘s Hot 100 charts during the 1980s, including four number ones, Prince was one of the most successful pop music acts of the decade. In fitting fashion, Prince was in the process of scoring the very first Top 40 single of his career as the 1980s began, as “I Wanna Be Your Lover” was rising to a peak position of number 11. Exactly 35 years ago, “I Wanna Be Your Lover” hit that peak position, where it would spend two weeks.

Prince’s first Top 40 hit is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.

One of the 1980s’ biggest popular music stars, Prince, attained huge success with his Purple Rain album, for which for the first time he featured the name of his band, the Revolution. When Prince & the Revolution released their follow-up album, Around The World In A Day, in 1985, it also did well, including spawning two Top 10 hits: “Raspberry Beret” and “Pop Life.” On this date in 1985, “Pop Life” hit its peak position of number 7, where it would spend one week.

Prince & the Revolution’s second Top 10 hit from Around The World In A Day is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.

The Mashup of the Week is by DJ John called It Takes Two To Kiss from 2005. It features songs by Prince, Rob Base, MARRS and EMF. The two main songs you can ascertain from the title “Kiss” by Prince and “It Takes Two” by DJ EZ Rock and Rob Base. This mashup is one of my favorites of all time because it mixes two my favorite dance songs together as one. What do you think?

As a DJ, there are just some songs that always invoke a physical reaction and pack your dance floor; one of those is “Kiss” by Price. The other day I realized that bass pumping, guitar driven tune is twenty-five years old. Kiss was one of several #1 hits of Prince’s career.

I often wonder when Prince changed his name to a symbol if that was the moment he jumped the shark. You always had to refer to him as the artist formerly known as Prince. How do you type that symbol into Google or iTunes?

What is your favorite Prince song?
