In a career that now extends for more than four decades, including his time with the band Genesis and his solo career, Peter Gabriel has become known for his politically engaged music that includes a series of, as one collection of his solo work puts it, “hits” and “misses.” The biggest of those “hits” went to number 1 exactly 25 years ago today, as “Sledgehammer” topped Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for one week. The song also became well known for its video, which was named MTV’s number 1 video for 1986 and is featured above.
