I know this much is true … Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of a New Jersey-based band hitting number 1. Today is an anniversary for another act from New Jersey. Exactly 20 years ago today, New jersey-based hip-hop duo P.M. Dawn hit number 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 with “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss,” which sampled the 1980s’ Spandau Ballet tune “True.” While this was the only time that P.M. Dawn would hit number 1, they did hit the top 40 three other times over the next couple of years, with “Paper Doll” going to number 28, “I’d Die Without You” hitting number 3, and “Looking Through Patient Eyes” rising to number 6.

Back in 2009, Tunesmate asked “Where are you now?” about P.M. Dawn. Well, at least we know where they were 20 years ago: at number one!

In the “Where Are They Now” file is P.M. Dawn. In the early to mid 90′s P.M. Dawn had a string of top 40 hits. Their style was smooth because they sampled riffs from popular tunes and then laid over the top of it smooth rap; they were quintessential poets. They are rapper poets to be exact. What happened to them and where are they and why are why isn’t their music relevant today? I honestly can’t remember the last time I heard one of their songs played on terrestrial radio or even satellite radio.

According to their website, the last time P.M. Dawn toured was 2007 with Boyz II Men.
