Roger

Exactly 25 years ago, Hamilton, Ohio-born Roger Troutman scored the biggest hit of his solo career as “I Want to Be Your Man” peaked at number 3 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart.  Troutman, who went by just “Roger” on his singles, had long been busy in the recording industry, working with such acts as Sly and the Family Stone and George Clinton, while also fronting the band Zapp.

“I Want to Be Your Man” featured Troutman’s signature talk box, which altered the sound of a singer’s voice.  The song also stands as Roger’s only top 40 solo hit, though he did provide backing vocals to 2Pac’s “California Love,” which hit number 1 for two weeks in July 1996.

Troutman passed away in April 1999, the victim of several gunshot wounds that appear to have been fired by his brother, Larry, who was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound that same day.
