Don’t Mean Nothing

Exactly 25 years ago today, Richard Marx peaked at number 3 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with his debut single, “Don’t Mean Nothing.”  That song began a run that put Marx in the record books, as his next six singles would all also hit the top 5, making him the first artist to hit the top 5 on the Hot 100 with each of his first seven singles.  “Don’t Mean Nothing” also began a run in which his first 12 singles all hit the top 20.

Marx hasn’t hit the top 20 as a performer since 1994, when “Now and Forever” and “The Way She Loves Me” marked his 13th and 14th top 20 hits, respectively, and his last Hot 100 chart appearance as a performer came on the duet “At The Beginning” with Donna Lewis from the film Anastasia.  Still, he has appeared on the Adult Contemporary chart as recently as the end of 2011 and beginning of 2012, and he has written numerous hits for other acts over the past couple of decades.
