DEF: Dolly Parton “I Will Always Love You”

In terms of pop music success, the song “I Will Always Love You” is most remembered for the version by Whitney Houston that spent 14 weeks at the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in 1992 and 1993. However, the song was originally a number one country hit in 1974 for one of country music’s most famous singers and songwriters, Dolly Parton. “I Will Always Love You” did not hit the Hot 100 for Parton in 1974, but she re-recorded the song in 1982 to correspond with its feature in the film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The new version, which also topped the country chart, did hit the Hot 100. On this date in 1982, Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” reached its pop music peak position of number 53.
