Selena

Dreaming of You

(2016)

Any time a life is cut short it is a tragedy. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was murdered months before the release of her final album Dreaming of You. She rose to the top of the Tejano music world, and was ready to break into the mainstream. This album has several R&B influenced songs and ballads that would go on to be some of her biggest hits. The track God’s Child (Baila Conmigo) is a duet with David Byrne of the Talking Heads.

Selena’s success was a family effort; her father managed the band, her brother wrote songs and played bass, and she met her husband Chris Perez after he joined the band as a guitarist. Her early career is defined by Tejano music, which is a blend of Mexican cumbia, ranchero, and German polka music.

The 2016 reissue of Dreaming of You is a dual-disc release. It is contained in a gate fold sleeve that has the credits and track listing on the inside. The album contains the core tracks plus several bonus tracks, such as some of her greatest hits like Como la Flor and Amor Prohibido.

The final side of the record features audio recordings of her family talking about Selena and her impact. This record is averaging a $25 price tag on Discogs and other online retailers, which is worth the price.
