25 Years Ago in the Nineties: Tom Petty “Free Fallin'”

Among his 15 Top 40 hits on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, Gainesville, Florida-born Tom Petty has had two singles reach the Top 10. The first Top 10 hit, “Don’t Do Me Like That,” hit number 10 in early 1980. The second Top 10 hit came almost exactly 10 years later, as exactly 25 years ago, “Free Fallin'” was in the midst of a two-week run at number 7, making it the most successful charting single of Petty’s career.
