This year when Metallica got inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, James Hetfield read off a list of artists that he thought deserved being inducted. Kiss was at top of his list. Think of the glam, the rock anthems and explosive stage performances, their tunes stand tall.

Kiss was nominated for the Rock Hall in 2010, but didn’t make it again. When will Kiss be awarded their mark on Rock and Roll history as inductees?

Thirty years ago this week, a 21-year-old Michael Jackson stood at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Rock With You.”  Michael Jackson had, of course, been famous for a decade by the time this song hit the chart, and this wasn’t even the first Number 1 song of his solo career.  “Ben” spent a week at Number 1 in 1972 and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” had just spent a week at Number 1 in October 1979.  However, while spending 4 weeks atop the chart, ”Rock With You” gave Michael two chart-toppers in a row.  The song also arguably blasted Michael into mega-superstar status, setting him up for the success from Thiller a few years later that would earn him the title “King of Pop” that he claimed (and had written into contracts).  Certainly, ”Rock With You” is memorable for its danceability as well as the laser show and Michael’s outfit in the video.

Do you continually sing the last song you heard? Recently I saw a medical report that cited the reason we sing the last song all day is because our brain is attempting to complete it. Most of us catch a clip of song, and it’s generally at the end of it. Then all of sudden the next thing that happens is it gets trapped in heads until another song can displace it.

What was the last song you couldn’t get out of your head?

Why is the TV show Glee such a big hit? I have only seen one episode but I’ve been listening to soundtrack music. I have to say that Glee’s cast renditions of 1980s and 1990s classics are well done. Recently Glee did their version of “Jump” by Van Halen and I was surprised that the guitar solo was perfectly executed in the style of the original.

Glee is a big hit because the writers are appealing to teen drama while pulling on the heart strings of Generation X musically.

In Demolition Man, the future generation was singing along to old commercial jingles like Meow-Mix. It is 2010, will this prediction come to fruition? It seems that lately commercial jingles seem to be a dying breed because major ad companies are recycling hit tunes from the past. Perhaps society attention span and adoration for original music will surmount to a 30 second jingle for Ala Seltzer as the top hit.
